PIAB is Ireland’s self-supported state body, which assesses personal injury compensation in a cost-efficient and timely manner. All personal injury cases go through PIAB if they are not settled earlier between insurers/respondents and claimants. However, medical negligence claims are not considered for the assessment by PIAB.
Types of accidents assessed by PIAB
Motor accidents can include anything from truck accidents, car accidents, bus accidents to motorcycle accidents, bicycle accidents, or even car accidents involving pedestrians.
Workplace accidents include incidents such as manual handling injuries, injuries sustained from a hazardous environment, trip and fall at work, repetitive strain injuries.
Public liability claims include slip, fall, or trip in a public place such as a supermarket, somebody else property, or on a footpath, pavement, or curb, public park accidents, shopping centre accidents.

The Book of Quantum
The PIAB Book of Quantum is a guide aggregated to help the Injuries Board assessors in the assessment of an injury claim. It is used to reach a compensation figure by following these steps:
1. Identifying the category of the injury:
- Head
- Neck
- Back and Spinal
- Upper Limbs
- Lower Limbs
- Body and Internal Organs
2. Understand the severity of the injury
- Minor
- Moderate
- Moderately severe
- Severe and permanent
3. Looking up the valye range of past similar injury settlements
4. Considering the effects of multiple injuries
